The 2026 List of Innovative Scholars in Basic Science Has Been Announced

The selection process for the 2026 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) "ICBS Innovation Fellowship" has recently concluded successfully. After two rigorous rounds of review, based on the applicants' research profiles, letters of recommendation, and research project proposals, the evaluation committee ultimately selected 10 outstanding scholars from 20 groups of initial candidates to be included in this year's "ICBS Innovation Fellowship" support program. The selected scholars work across a wide range of research fields, covering both fundamental and cutting-edge interdisciplinary areas such as geometry, algebraic geometry, number theory, computational mathematics, quantum field theory, quantum gravity, neutrino experimental physics, geometric imaging in medical applications, optimization problems, and artificial intelligence with formal proofs.
To carry forward the spirit of ancient Chinese scientists, at the proposal of ICBS Chairman Professor Shing-Tung Yau, the "ICBS Innovation Fellowship" is divided into three major categories—mathematics, physics, and engineering—and named after Liu Hui, Zu Chongzhi, Zhang Heng, and Li Bing, respectively. This highlights the program's academic pursuit of being rooted in China while striving to advance scientific progress.

The "Basic Science Innovation Scholars" program, relying on the ICBS international academic platform, aims to identify mid-career and young scientific research backbone talents who are engaged full-time in cutting-edge research in fields such as mathematics, physics, and engineering in China. It focuses on supporting outstanding talents with exceptional innovative potential, promoting the output of original basic research achievements, establishing a normalized cultivation mechanism for young talents in basic science, and consolidating the national reserve of scientific and technological innovation talents. This program concept draws on internationally renowned awards such as the Sloan Research Fellowship and the Guggenheim Fellowship, and will provide a solid backing for young scholars to take root in cutting-edge research at an early stage of their careers.
This round of review brought together 16 senior scholars from home and abroad, led by 6 Chinese and foreign academicians including 2 Fields Medalists, Shing-Tung Yau and Edward Witten, with over 100 field experts participating in project recommendations. Edward Witten, a renowned physicist and Fields Medalist, served as one of the review experts and spoke highly of the participating projects and scholars: "I was impressed by the overall level of the candidates." The review committee also stated that it was extremely difficult to make choices among so many outstanding candidates. It is reported that this program will serve as a regular project of ICBS to encourage young scholars to engage in cutting-edge research, with annual selections and continuous tracking of project progress and research results. ICBS plans to expand the number of "Basic Science Innovation Scholars" selected in 2027 to 20–30.
