On 3 September 2025, a grand ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, with Academician Shing-Tung Yau among the invited attendees.

In an interview prior to the parade, Professor Yau shared his profound impressions of the ceremony and emphasised the strategic importance of fundamental science to national security. He noted that the development of cutting-edge weaponry invariably relies on the underpinnings of foundational disciplines such as mathematics and physics. Without original innovation and substantial accumulation in basic science, nations risk becoming technologically dependent on others.
