Hetao Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences，HIMIS Initiated by renowned mathematician and Fields Medal laureate Professor Shing-Tung Yau, the institute is situated within the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone in Shenzhen's Hetao area. Building upon the district's strategic location, favourable policies and abundant resources, the institute will strive to connect the educational, scientific and industrial strengths of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. It aims to establish a hub for top-tier talent and resources in mathematics, physics, artificial intelligence and related fields, thereby creating a world-class platform for mathematical and multidisciplinary research.
The Institute will establish a comprehensive multidisciplinary research framework and a multi-tiered talent recruitment and development system. Starting from the foundational principles of mathematics and theoretical research, it will construct an integrated research system spanning fundamental research, applied studies, and industrial applications. This approach will provide the essential theoretical foundations and innovative impetus for the long-term development and practical application of mathematics.
The Institute will advance the integration of research, education, industry and application in foundational disciplines such as mathematics through a research paradigm comprising 25% pure mathematics, 50% applied mathematics, and 25% interdisciplinary collaboration and technology transfer. It will attract world-leading talent and teams to establish a multidisciplinary research platform integrating fundamental research, talent recruitment and cultivation. This initiative will provide crucial support for achieving greater original breakthroughs and industrial applications in foundational disciplines including mathematics, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing for Shenzhen, the Greater Bay Area and the nation.
