String-net models based on pivotal bicategories

Abstract:
The string-net construction uses colored graphs embedded in surfaces to produce an open-closed modular functor. In a standard construction the algebraic inpt datum of the construction is a spherical fusion category. I will describe a string-net construction for which the input is instead a pivotal bicategory. An essential ingredient is a graphical calculus for pivotal bicategories. Both the construction and the graphical calculus are covariant under suitable classes of functors of bicategories.
Of particular interest are the bicategories of simple special symmetric Frobenius algebras in a modular fusion category C and the delooping of C. The string-net modular functors obtained from these bicategories are connected by a pseudonatural transformation. I will describe some major properties of this transformation.
